The Story Behind Refqa

From a personal connection to a thriving community

01

How It All Began

The spark of Refqa was born from a personal story. When Yomna met a friend who is deaf and communicates through sign language, she decided to learn sign language herself — just to communicate better with her friend. That small act of empathy planted the first seed of what would later become Refqa: a vision of genuine inclusion built on understanding and communication.

02

From an Idea to a Movement

Later, Yomna participated in a girls-only hackathon, where she teamed up with seven inspiring young women — Menna, Sara, Alaa, Rahma, Salma, Habiba, and Jana. Together, they developed the initial concept of Refqa during the competition, crafting a vision that united people with disabilities, their families, volunteers, and specialists in one inclusive platform. Their dedication and teamwork led them to take the second place in the hackathon, which marked as the first milestone in Refqa's journey. After the event, Omar joined the team as the 9th member, taking on the roles of Business Developer and CTO, helping the project grow from concept to reality.

03

Building a Community

With passion and persistence, the Refqa team launched a volunteering form to open the doors for others to join. Within a short time, they welcomed over 25 volunteers across different fields — including Human Resources, Public Relations, Marketing, Graphic Design, Video Editing, and Event Organization. Each volunteer shared the same belief: that technology can bring people together to learn, help, and empower one another.

04

Today & Beyond

Today, the team is developing the Refqa Application which is the core of their mission. This app aims to become a safe, smart, and inclusive digital home where every person, whether a volunteer, specialist, or person with a disability, can both give and receive support. Refqa continues to grow with one purpose in mind: to make inclusion not just a word, but a living experience for everyone.
